UnitedHealthcare, Konami bring health games to schools ...

ddr classroomKonami might not be a familiar name in healthcare, but gamers likely recognize the Japanese company as one of the pioneers of the video game industry that successfully transitioned from jukeboxes to arcade games to home video game systems in the 1980s. And now, in partnership with UnitedHealthcare (a division of UnitedHealth Group), the company is entering the field of public health, offering their DanceDanceRevolution Classroom Edition as a pilot in three schools in Florida, Georgia, and Texas.

?It?s part of a broader initiative we have to reduce childhood obesity,? said Will Shanley, Director of Public Relations at UnitedHealthcare. ?A big portion of that is the idea of ?exergaming.? The reality is that kids need to be engaged in fun and interactive ways. It?s important to meet them where they?re at. Kids enjoy playing videogames. If we can have them have fun and get exercise, it?ll build lifelong habits toward fitness. We think this is one important way we can engage kids.?

DanceDanceRevolution, or DDR, began as an arcade game in Japan in 1998, moving to America and Europe in 1999. It?s since been released for a number of home consoles. To win the game, players must step on one of four arrows in time with the music and onscreen instructions. The game uses popular songs and the dances increase in speed and complexity as the players progress. The ubiquity of the game led to its being used in a number of peer-reviewed studies that showed it could encourage increased physical activity for young people and even be helpful in autism therapy.

Konami announced the classroom edition of DDR in April 2012. The version provides 48 wireless dance mats, enough for a large class, and is connected to a PC rather than a gaming console (as in the home versions). Each mat contains a smart card which can hold data for an individual student, allowing the student and the teacher to track BMI and calories burned playing the game. The teacher enters the students? age, height, weight, and gender and the mat combines that information with game data to estimate steps taken, caloric burn rate, and other data points, Clara Baum, senior director of marketing and strategic partnerships for Konami, said in an email. The school can set up the system so students and their parents can see all of their data via a secure website.

Konami has also announced upcoming partnerships with the American Diabetes Association, the National Foundation on Fitness, Sports, and Nutrition, and First Lady Michelle Obama?s Let?s Move in Schools campaign, to bring DDR Classroom Edition to more schools. There are dance and physical education curricula built into the system as well, following the standards of the National Association for Sports and Physical Education (NASPE), and school-appropriate music provided by Sony Music. Outside of partnerships, schools can also purchase the system at a variable pricing structure depending on the number of mats needed and whether the school needs a screen and sound system. Baum said the system is already very popular.

?We?re just launching, so limited systems are deployed in classrooms,? she told MobiHealthNews in an email. ?But believe it or not, we?re sold out. We?re in full production, but all of those systems are allocated.?

UnitedHealthcare is also launching a pilot program using Xbox Kinect, Shanley said. That program, which is currently gathering efficacy data, will test the potential of exercise videogames in the home as a public health tool in the fight against childhood obesity.

The Benefits of Rolling Over Your 401(k) or 403(b) Into an IRA ...

I?ve switched jobs several times in my career and each time I had to decide what I wanted to do with my 401(k). Each time, I rolled it over into a Rollover IRA. It wasn?t that my employer?s 401(k) was bad (it was average in both cases) it was that there are so many benefits to rolling over an IRA to an actual brokerage firm.

Consolidate all your old 401(k)s into one IRA.

One of the best ways to save for retirement is to use a tax-advantaged plan offered by your employer, such as a 401(k) and 403(b). You can grow your wealth through the help of investing, and more of your money can grow , thanks to the tax advantages. The tricky part is always whether you have enough options. Not all defined contribution plans, as these are known, are created equal and sometimes the plan options or the plan fees make it a dicey proposition at best.

When you leave a company, you have the option of rolling over your plan into an IRA, keeping it with your employer, or rolling it over to your new employer?s plan. I?ve always opted to rollover my plans into a rollover IRA and today I?ll explain the reasons why.

More Investing Options

One of the main benefits of an IRA is that there are often more investing options. If you contribute to your employer?s retirement plan, you might end up with only a few options chosen by the plan administrator. You might have to be heavily invested in company stock or you might have a limited number of high cost mutual funds to choose from. The point isn?t to lambaste the administrator, they?re simply trying to pick the options they believe should be made available to all employees.

Instead of relying on these investment options, some of which you might not be comfortable with, you can roll your plan over to an IRA and have nearly the entire universe of options available to you. IRAs are individual accounts so you have access to a wider variety of investing options. You might be able to add cash, bonds, and stocks, as well as other asset classes, to your IRA.

Fees

The fees with an IRA can often be lower than what is charged by your plan administrator. I know that when I rolled over my 401(k), the brokerage charged no annual administrative fee and that saved me $50 a year. The only fees I paid were the expenses of the mutual funds I was invested in, which my 401(k) was also charging me. Lastly, the expense fees I was paying now were much lower because they were index funds rather than actively managed funds. You can?t control how your investments perform but you can control how much you pay in fees, which has a direct impact on your returns.

What about Taxes?

If you roll over to an IRA, you don?t normally need to pay taxes. As long as you are careful to designate your withdrawal as a rollover, and as long as the money is invested in a Traditional IRA, you don?t have to worry about taxes. The only exception is if you are rolling your money over from a tax-deferred account into a Roth IRA, which is known as a conversion.

With a tax-deferred account, such as a traditional 401(k) or 403(b), you receive a tax deduction and you are expected to pay taxes later, when you withdraw from your account. If you roll over the money from a traditional plan to a Roth IRA, you will have to pay income taxes on the money (although you will escape the 10% penalty for an early withdrawal if you are under 59 ? years of age).

Carefully consider your financial situation. It may be that it makes sense for you to roll your? 401(k) or 403(b) into an IRA to improve your investment options, or to better handle your tax planning for the long run.

The Mars mystique

After 50 years of missions to Mars, scientists are unlocking some of the mysteries surrounding a planet that has captivated mankind for millenniums. Will ?humans ever leave a boot print on Mars?

The mood among mission controllers was subdued. Scientists at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), in the foothills of southern California's San Gabriel Mountains, were worried about the landing of their spacecraft on Mars.

With good reason.

Three months earlier, in September 1999, the Mars Climate Orbiter had arrived at the red planet, only to burn up in the atmosphere instead of taking up its intended orbit. Now, on Dec. 3, NASA officials were nervous about the fate of the Mars Polar Lander as it approached the planet, even though they had taken all the precautions they could to prevent a similar mishap.

"The tension was palpable," recalls Scott Hubbard, then a deputy director at NASA's Ames Research Center Laboratory, who was at the event. "Everyone was on edge."

Their anxiety turned out to be prophetic. When the $110 million lander finally touched down on the planet, it did so with all the subtlety of Wile E. Coyote's anvil falling off the cliff. Investigators later posited that the most likely cause was a bogus "I've landed" signal sent to the computerized flight-control system when, in fact, the lander was still 131 feet up. It had deployed its legs as planned. But that triggered an errant signal that caused the landing rockets to shut down prematurely, leaving the craft to crash into Mars at about 50 miles per hour. Controllers were never able to make contact with the lander or the two probes it ferried.

The debacle marked a low point in NASA's decades-old quest to explore Mars. The loss of the lander was the third failure in six years. In the 13 years since, however, the effort has undergone a remarkable turnaround. The agency has overseen the most comprehensive, systematic ? and successful ? effort to investigate another planet since the dawn of the Space Age. A string of six triumphant orbiters, landers, and rovers has helped unlock mysteries about a planet that has captivated humans since the Babylonians.

Now, as the most sophisticated rover humans have ever sent into the cosmos inches its way along the planet's ruddy surface, mankind may be reaching a hinge moment in the study of Mars. Curiosity's slow journey across Gale Crater marks a shift from tracing the history of water on Mars to focusing on efforts that could help answer a question humans have been asking since Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens drew up the first practical sketches of the planet in the mid-1600s: Did Mars ever host life?

Curiosity's landing alone was euphoric for NASA: Its soft touchdown in August, at the end of a "sky crane" tether, heralded a new era of precision landings that was watched by millions around the world, creating a triumphant moment for an often-beleaguered space agency.

Centimeter by centimeter, Curiosity is hunting for evidence that Gale, a desiccated ding in the planet's surface with a central peak towering 18,000 feet above the crater floor, may have harbored conditions that permitted primitive life to exist early in Mars' history. But that's just one spot on the planet ? akin to trying to figure out the biological history of Earth by landing solely in rural Chile (which scientists often use as a stand-in for Mars).

Photovoltaic cell manufacture: Device tosses out unusable PV wafers

Jan. 15, 2013 ? Silicon wafers destined to become photovoltaic (PV) cells can take a bruising through assembly lines, as they are oxidized, annealed, purified, diffused, etched, and layered to reach their destinies as efficient converters of the sun's rays into useful electricity.

All those refinements are too much for 5% to 10% of the costly wafers. They have micro-cracks left over from incomplete wafer preparation, which causes them to break on the conveyers or during cell fabrication.

Scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) have developed an instrument that puts pressure on the wafers to find which ones are too fragile to make it through the manufacturing process -- and then kicks out those weak wafers before they go through their costly enhancement. NREL's Silicon Photovoltaic Wafer Screening System (SPWSS) is a cube-shaped furnace about 15 inches each side, and can be retrofitted into an assembly line.

The PV industry generated $82 billion in global revenues in 2010, producing 20.5 gigawatts of electricity from sunlight. Processing solar cells costs about 15 cents for each watt of potential energy, and the cells comprise about half the cost of an installed solar module. If a way can be found to eliminate the cost of the 5% to 10% of cells that are destined to fail before they're finished, potential annual savings run into the billions of dollars.

It's the kind of savings that can make the difference between a U.S. manufacturer winning or losing.

Wafer Screening System Simulates Manufacturing Stress

NREL's Silicon Photovoltaic Wafer Screening System, developed by NREL scientist Bhushan Sopori with colleagues Prakash Basnyat and Peter Rupnowski, exposes a silicon wafer to thermal stress in the form of carefully calibrated high temperatures.

The process looks a lot like the toasting belt that turns a cold sub sandwich into a warm one. As each wafer passes through a narrow -- 15-millimeter -- high-intensity illumination zone, different strips of the wafer are exposed to the heat. That way, the stress travels through the wafer.

"We create a very high temperature peak," said Sopori, principal investigator for the SPWSS. "The idea is to create a thermal stress, like putting very hot water in a glass."

The temperature can be calibrated precisely -- most usefully by correlating it to the thickness of the wafer, because the thinner the wafer, the less stress it can withstand. Every manufacturer has different levels at which their wafers can break from stress, so the SPWSS can be calibrated precisely via computer to meet the needs of each solar cell maker.

The SPWSS is essentially a furnace shaped like a trapezoidal prism to narrow the focus of the light and increase its intensity. The ceramic sides of the furnace reflect the light to the intensity zone and ensure that almost no energy is wasted.

The lamps can be as hot as 1,800 degrees Celsius, but the hottest part of the wafer will feel about 500 degrees Celsius on its surface.

It's the rapid increase in thermal energy -- made possible by the geometry of the furnace and its highly reflective surfaces -- that causes the stress. While one 15-millimeter strip of the wafer is feeling 500 degrees Celsius of stress, the strip adjacent to it feels much cooler. The hot strip wants to expand, but the cool strip doesn't want any part of that. It's these competing forces that cause the stress. "Every micron of the wafer sees this thermal stress," Sopori said.

The micro-cracks or breaks that occasionally develop from the thermal stress mirror the stress that will happen to weak wafers as they go through the assembly process. The difference is that the thermal testing happens first, before the expensive coatings and layers are added to the wafers.

Inside the SPWSS is a reflective cavity that uses nearly 100% of the energy from the power source, wasting almost none of it. That keeps the energy costs down, bringing the total cost of operating the system to "some fraction of a penny per wafer," Sopori said.

Low-Cost Instrument Can Enhance U.S. Competitiveness

In recent years, the United States has lost a large portion of its global market share of PV production, from 42% in 1997 to merely 4% in 2011. Because of this trend, analysts who study the solar industry say it will take dramatic changes in solar cell materials and production to ensure that the most innovative and lowest cost PV technologies are manufactured in the United States.

The loss in revenue due to broken wafers -- which increases dramatically as the wafers move closer to completion -- is an important barrier to solar energy becoming cost competitive with other energy technologies. Manufacturers need better, less expensive ways to make the cells.

In a typical manufacturing facility, about 5 to 10 of every 100 wafers of 180-micron thickness break or otherwise fail. With the increased use of even thinner cells, breakage frequency is likely to grow. The PV industry typically does not prepare wafers in a way that can maintain their high mechanical strength. Even a suction cup that moves the wafers from one process to another can cause the micro-cracks that doom wafers to failure.

System Can Test up to 1,200 Wafers an Hour

A system that can screen just a sampling of wafers doesn't tell manufacturers which wafers to use and which ones to toss.

The manual version of SPWSS screens 1,200 wafers an hour and costs $60,000. That's quick enough for most manufacturers to screen every wafer without slowing down their conveyers. The upgraded SPWSS-A automatically separates broken wafers and costs $100,000. The failed wafers are swept out and melted down to be processed again into boules of solar-grade silicon.

Building on Success of NREL's Optical Cavity Furnace

With the SPWSS, Sopori built on the success of his Optical Cavity Furnace, which uses optics to heat and purify solar cells at unmatched precision while sharply boosting the cells' efficiency. Sopori won an R&D 100 award in 2011 for the furnace, which encloses an array of lamps within a highly reflective chamber to achieve an unprecedented level of temperature uniformity.

Like the SPWSS, it mitigates energy loss by lining the cavity walls with super-insulating and highly reflective ceramics, and by using a complex optimal geometric design. The wafer itself absorbs what would otherwise be energy loss. Like a microwave oven, each furnace dissipates energy only on the target, not on the container. "The most efficient way to generate light for the Silicon Photovoltaic Wafer Screening System is to use it in conjunction with the Optical Cavity Furnace," Sopori said.

5 Things You Need to Know About Credit Card Processing Online ...

Ring in the new year by ringing up more sales on your website when you offer credit card processing.

By now, you?ve no doubt heard all about this little thing called the Internet and how people are losing hours and hours of their lives to things like the worst celebrity fashion, Fantasy Football, videos of kittens getting baths (it?s just so adorably pathetic!) and online shopping.

The online sales opportunities for small business are endless, especially if you offer credit card processing.

Research shows that businesses that do not offer online credit card processing could be losing 60 to 80 percent of potential orders, according to Score.org. What?s more, offering credit card payments means you?ll likely see an increase in both the number of orders you receive, as well as the size of each order.

Whether you?re just starting a business or looking to expand, here?s what you need to know about accepting credit cards on your website:

?

In-store vs. Online Credit Card Processing

The biggest difference between processing a credit card in a bricks-and-mortar store and doing so online is having the physical card on hand to swipe. In-store credit card processing requires a credit card reader attached to a modem and (in most cases) a point of sales system. For in-store purchases, the merchant is responsible for verifying the card and cardholder by asking for ID or comparing the signature on the back of the card to the sales slip. Typically, the fees for processing in-person credit card transactions are lower than those for transactions when neither the card or cardholder are present (this is because the risk of fraud is higher for such transactions).

Getting Started

If you don?t already have one for your bricks-and-mortar store, the first step to accepting credit or debit cards online is to apply for a Merchant Account. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), if your business has a reliable sales record, you should be able to get a Merchant Account through your personal bank or a financial institution that specializes in e-commerce.

If your business is a startup and/or doesn?t have a sales history, you might have to go through a third-party ?independent sales organization? (ISO) that acts as a middleman between your business and the merchant processor. When working with an ISO, the SBA advices business owners to be wary of scams and overcharging ? most do charge businesses extra fees in exchange for taking on the risk of working with someone with an unproven track record.

You?ll obviously also want to check that your Merchant Account Provider will process transactions that originate from the internet (not all do) and that transaction data is safe from credit card fraud.

To help figure out whether a third-party ?gateway payment? service or Merchant Account Provider would be more suitable for your business, estimate what your average total purchase price will be and your monthly volume. While setting up a Merchant Account might be more costly at the outset, you could save money down the road as the service fees add up for gateway payments.

According to?Inc magazine, the most important things to look for when shopping around for online credit card processing is a service provider that?s:

  • consistent, so that customers feel comfortable using your site
  • secure (for obvious reasons)
  • able to accept all forms of payment from anywhere at anytime

Here are five more useful things you need to know about online credit card processing:

1. Fees: Obviously, all service providers have different fee structures, but some here are some fees you can expect to see regardless:

  • a one-time set-up fee
  • a monthly statement fee
  • a monthly gateway fee
  • per-transaction fees

In addition, many also have a monthly minimum for sales. To figure out what sort of fee structure would be the most cost effective for your business, Score advises that you consider the nature of your products. If they are large and expensive, it might be smarter to look for a Merchant Account Provider that offers a higher flat-rate transaction fee, but minimizes the discount rate (a $1 transaction fee on a high-cost item would likely be less than a 2.5 percent deduction from your charge). If you have a high volume of low-dollar sales, then you?d want to look for the lowest transaction fee (or look for a flat monthly rate) because those charges will add up quickly.

2. Checkout: Service providers will either route your customers from the shopping cart on your site to a secure-payment system on their site, or embed a payment button directly on your site. The cost of embedding it on your site may be greater, but it may also improve the user experience.

3. Security: In addition to using a provider that has a history of preventing credit card fraud, there are additional steps you can take to help prevent fraudulent purchases, including asking for the three- or four-digit verification code on the back of the credit card and using an address verification system (which could result in small fees or lower rates from the credit card processor).

4. Mobile: According to Forbes, 20 percent of all e-commerce shopping is done on a mobile device ? and that number is expected to double or triple each year. For websites not optimized for mobile shopping, the number of shopping sessions that end up in a sale actually drops 75 percent. Given the proliferation of mobile technology, it would be wise to invest early in smartphone and tablet-friendly credit card processing.

5. Other services: Help broaden your customer base by also offering traditional forms of online payment ? like PayPal ? which is more familiar to customers and will help them feel more comfortable using your site. Credit cards aren?t as pervasive in other countries, so if you anticipate a lot of international sales, offering alternative methods of payment is useful. Plus, online payment services generally have lower fees than Merchant Accounts, which is especially useful for small businesses that process a high number of small transactions.

Author Yvonne Jones Attempts to Close Gap Between Military and Civilian Worlds

Blackanthem Military News

Tampa, FL ? Author Yvonne Jones is a military spouse of 13 years and counting, who has moved nationally and internationally more than 10 times since the military became part of her life.? Now she taps that experience in a book that is meant to close the current gap of understanding that persists between military and civilian worlds.? The book is entitled ?Closing The Gap: Understanding Your Serivce(wo)man? and is written from the different perspectives of military family members.?

A smaller share of Americans currently serve in the Armed Forces than at any other given point in time since World War II.? This, in turn, has led to a growing gap between people in uniform and the civilian population.? The author wrote this book in an attempt to close this gap by promoting understanding.?

The subject of the book is the disconnect between military families and their civilian families and friends, and focuses on explaining and describing the lifestyle of the entire military family, including Service Members of all branches, their Spouses, and their Children.? It is meant to make a positive difference by giving people within the civilian world the information they need to understand the experiences of and reconnect with military families.

Faith Eidse, Ph.D., Author of the award-winning oral history ?Voices of Apalachicola? says:?

?I have thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end.? It pulled my heartstrings and spoke to me with the author?s insights.? This is for more than family and friends; it?s for the 99 percent who need a better understanding of their service(wo)men, since they belong to the national family.?

Judy Davis, The Direction Diva, says:

Mets on ESPN?s Sunday Night Baseball on May 26

ESPN?s Sunday Night Baseball released the schedule for the first two months of the season, during which the Mets play the?Braves in Citi Field on May 26.

Coincidentally, that is the same day the Mets had scheduled their afternoon, pre-game Banner Day.

To compare, the Mets were only slated for one game in April and May when ESPN released their initial 2011 Sunday Night Baseball schedule. Last year, the Mets were slated for none.

It?s worth noting that games after June 1 are typically announced just two to three weeks in advance of the broadcast, which is why they are not mentioned in the initial schedule release, so it is probable the Mets will be featured at other points throughout the season.

Let's stay together? The multi-generation family holiday is back ...

?

?

A family jaunt to the seaside with everyone from Great Aunt Ethel down to Little Baby Johnny seemed to belong to a quaint bygone era of striped deckchairs, flowery bathing caps and wicker picnic baskets, but 2012 has seen the comeback of the classic family holiday.

Does the return of the big family holiday spell out more fun, or more stress?

Getting the right mix of people is crucial to a holiday. It can make the difference between holiday dream and holiday nightmare.

Holiday dream or disaster?

On the one hand, more people can mean more clashes of opinion, squabbles over whose turn it is to do the washing up and who left the sandy wetsuit in the bath.

On the other hand, a big family getaway can be a fantastic chance to spend some time with family members you don?t get to see that often. Plus it?s often cheaper to split the cost of one large holiday property between an extended family than it is for a smaller group to shoulder the expense.

Your children will have friends and cousins to play with and entertain each other. Being with aunts, uncles and grandparents means you can arrange to share the babysitting, allowing everyone a night off or out on the town.

Shared activities ? days out or gathering around the table for some old-fashioned board games ? are great for family bonding and banter. Just remember to give each other space to do things independently too.

Dining out as a large group can become a large additional holiday expense, however there are ways around this.? With some careful advance planning and preparation, you can save yourself some money and precious holiday time. Make some meals at home and freeze them to bring with you, no one wants to spend their holiday tied to the kitchen sink. Ask other members of the party to do the same. You?ll soon find you have many meals planned. Then you can just sit back and enjoy a great family feast around the table together.

With a bit of forward planning, your big family holiday can be one to remember ? for all the right reasons.

Smoky Hill names Gateway's Justin Hoffman football coach

Smoky Hill didn't need to look far to find its next football coach.

The Buffaloes on Monday announced the hiring of Justin Hoffman, who had been the head coach at nearby Gateway ? just five miles away ? for the past six seasons.

Smoky hired him in the hope he can replicate his success at Gateway ? namely, creating a culture of success.

Hoffman was 28-32 at Gateway since 2007, including 7-3 in 2012. His overall record, though, is deceiving. He inherited a program that went 1-9 in 2006, then went 0-9 in 2007. Hoffman's teams were 28-23 since 2008, and went to the playoffs every year during that stretch.

"It was a lot of fun in getting up to where (Gateway) is today and being competitive at 7-3 and losing three games by 12 points," Hoffman said. "That's what we're going to try to do (at Smoky Hill): We're trying to create a program, not just a winning season."

Hoffman resigned from Gateway on Monday, and spoke with some members of his former team about the new job at Smoky Hill this afternoon.

His commute won't change much. Smoky Hill is just a 15-minute drive down Chambers Road from Gateway. Adding to the intrigue: Gateway and Smoky Hill will open the 2013 season against one another, as they did in 2012, a 26-0 Gateway win.

"I honestly didn't even think about that part of it as factoring into the decision at all," Hoffman said. "You know, it just so happens that maybe they're a little bit more familiar with me because we opened up Week 1 with them last year. I think it's kind of neat for Gateway's seniors next year to open up that way. I think that's going to be a pretty good setting for them. Hopefully, we'll make the Buffs a little bit stronger."

Smoky Hill went 4-6 under coach John Thompson last season. Thompson resigned in December after seven seasons as coach. The Buffaloes are 13-35 since 2008, but have been to the playoffs the past three seasons.

The Buffaloes will return starting quarterback Trent Clay, a junior, as well as his top target, Frank Thomas.

Last season, Hoffman's Gateway team threw just 65 times, compared with 388 rushing attempts. The Olympians had 2,840 yards on the ground and 43 touchdowns.

Smoky Hill had more of a balanced offense ? attempting 257 passes to 324 rushes ? but does graduate three of its top four rushers.

Hoffman said he'd adjust his offense.

"Any smart coach is going to adapt to kids," he said. "It's certainly nice to have a kid like Clay coming back. That's another draw to the job: you already have a quarterback in place."

Demi Moore Mud Bath Photos Reveal Crazy Times In Mexico

Demi Moore was spotted in Mexico enjoying some vacation time with friends in the mud and a bath that?s supposed to help rejuvenate the skin, body, and mind. The actress has been spotted at a few public places and it?s apparent that she?s moving on with her life without Ashton Kutcher.

Demi Moore Mud Bath

Kutcher filed for divorce last month, which was when Moore went into hiding. As it turns out, it didn?t last long because she was spotted at a party and was enjoying herself. There are rumors that she has hooked up with another young man, younger than Kutcher.

Moore, 50, was photographed enjoying a mud bath, which is common for tourists who visit the resort in Tulum, Mexico.

?Demi Moore was snapped enjoying a mud spa treatment on her Christmas vacation at a resort in Tulum, Mexico. She indulged with a little dirt on the beach and relaxed in the warm sunshine,? insiders said.

?Of course, the 50-year-old star bared her muy caliente bikini bod for the beauty treatment, flaunting her slim and trim figure while getting down ?n dirty,? according to media outlet E! Online.

?Demi was joined by a group of girlfriends on the holiday vacay, and she stayed in Mexico for a week, enjoying the mud bath on New Year?s Eve,? E! says.

Friends and other insiders say Moore is ?in a really good place at the moment and is hopeful about the future.?

Moore is seeing someone but it?s ?nothing serious? for the time being, so she?s putting off public appearances for now.

Kutcher, who is dating Mila Kunis, was finally granted a divorce after Moore refused to sign the papers, prompting speculation that a court battle was near, but the two reached a financial agreement that would please them both.

Moore has been though a lot of turmoil with Kutcher and friends are upbeat that she is finally moving forward with her life.

Parkinson's can lead to anxiety and other non-motor symptoms, even early on

Jan. 14, 2013 ? While movement problems are the main symptom of Parkinson's disease, a new study shows that even early in the course of disease people frequently experience many non-motor symptoms such as drooling, anxiety and constipation. The study is published in the January 15, 2013, print issue of Neurology?, the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology.

"Oftentimes people with early Parkinson's don't even mention these symptoms to their doctors, and doctors don't ask about them, yet many times they can be treated effectively," said study author Tien K. Khoo, PhD, of Newcastle University in the United Kingdom.

The study compared 159 people with newly diagnosed Parkinson's disease to 99 people of similar ages who did not have the condition. Participants were asked whether they experienced any of the 30 non-motor symptoms screened for, including sexual problems, sleep problems and gastrointestinal problems.

Those with Parkinson's disease had an average of eight of the non-motor problems, compared to three for the people who did not have the disorder. Among the most common symptoms for those with Parkinson's disease were drooling, urinary urgency, constipation, anxiety and a reduced sense of smell. These likely represent other symptoms of Parkinson's that may be present even before the diagnosis is made.

A total of 56 percent of the people with Parkinson's had problems with excess saliva or drooling, compared to 6 percent of those without the disease. A total of 42 percent of those with Parkinson's had constipation, compared to 7 percent of the control group. For anxiety, it was 43 percent compared to 10 percent.

"These results show that Parkinson's affects many systems in the body, even in its earliest stages," Khoo said. "Often these symptoms affect people's quality of life just as much if not more than the movement problems that come with the disease. Both doctors and patients need to bring these symptoms up and consider available treatments."

The study was supported by Parkinson's UK, Newcastle University Lockhart Parkinson's Disease Research Fund, and the UK National Institute for Health Research.

Studies of migratory birds need to embrace a versatile mix of data - including geolocator technology, stable-isotope analysis , mark-recapture (banding) data along with citizen science data

Animals move around the globe in billions, sometimes - like the snow bunting - one of the iconic Arctic-breeding species, covering huge distances and enduring the most extreme frigid weather conditions. In this conspicuously white sparrow-sized bird, animal migration epitomizes a stunning success of biological adaptation with Snow Bunting representing the only songbird to breed as far north as the Arctic Circle. Indeed, there is nothing north of the snow bunting's breeding ground except the North Pole and the polar ice cap. These passerines thrive in chilly, alpine conditions, playing and singing in temperatures dipping as low as -20F.

Although snow buntings (Plectrophenax nivalis) have so far been considered common and widespread, enjoying stable numbers and extensive nesting and wintering habitats, their North American populations have shrunk by 64% over the past four decades, according to the National Audubon Society .

These alarming statistics may reflect how nature and wildlife are responding to climate change and rising temperatures. Because snow buntings need snow and cold, the increasingly warmer winters are the species' primary long-term threat. And although considerable attention is currently being paid to the conservation of migratory birds, this species remains still relatively under-studied. New data and novel methods of research are needed to assess the conservation implications of habitat changes in wintering locations as well as the effects of climate change on their breeding success. Fresh light on the migration patterns of remote populations of this avian species is shed by the recent work of a group led and inspired by Prof. Oliver P. Love - a wildlife biologist from the University of Windsor in Ontario, Canada.

In the article "Strong Migratory Connectivity in a Declining Arctic Passerine" published recently in Animal Migration - an open access journal by Versita Christie Macdonald, a student of Love's, and her colleagues try to determine how snow bunting populations are linked in space and time. Considering that the snow bunting poses an extra challenge to monitor due to its inaccessible breeding locations, nomadic lifestyle and small body size, they argue, combining multiple sources of data is the most appropriate approach to track patterns of the birds' migratory connectivity.

The authors discovered that the population of snow buntings in North America is divided. The individuals to the east of Hudson Bay do not regularly mix with the ones to the west of Hudson Bay. These two sub-populations also migrate different distances. The article supports the idea that thorough studies into this species need to embrace a versatile mix of data - including geolocator technology, stable-isotope analysis , mark-recapture (banding) data along with citizen science data. Macdonald and colleagues show strong evidence for an east-west parallel migratory system, with Hudson Bay acting as a migratory divide. While band recoveries suggest strong migratory connectivity among eastern wintering populations (more than 95% of band recoveries reveal connections between western Greenland and eastern North America), novel application of geolocators and stable-hydrogen isotope analysis to a Canadian breeding population reveal a high degree of migratory connectivity within western North American wintering populations.

Both sub-populations need to be conserved in order to save the overall population and, more importantly, the effects of global warming and other anthropogenic changes on one sub-population may be different from its effects on the other sub-population.

The mixed-data approach described in Animal Migration (with geolocators being used for the first time on arctic-breeding passerines) is innovative and still uncommon but a better understanding of winter movement and connectivity between wintering and breeding populations should help direct timely conservation efforts for this and other iconic Canadian Arctic-breeding avian species

College student stabbed within an inch of his life on New Year?s Day

A college student came within a millimeter of losing his life on New Year?s Day after a thug stabbed him in the neck near Grand Central Terminal.

Charles Infanger, 22 ? who lives in Westchester and attends the University of Maryland ? was heading home at 7:20 a.m. after a night of revelry when a pair identified by police as Carlos Munoz, 39, and Olga Concepcion, 48, asked to use his cellphone.

Munoz allegedly pocketed the phone and a scuffle broke out. Cops said Munoz stabbed Infanger in the neck with a serrated knife.

?He was within a millimeter of being dead,? said one source. He suffered a laceration to his jugular vein.

?My adrenaline was pumping and stuff, but I didn?t panic. I didn?t realize I was stabbed until I was in the hospital,? said Infanger, who has recovered.

Munoz and Concepcion were arrested on Jan. 9, cops said.

Wedding bells ring for everyone at Bangor's Bridal Show

BANGOR, Maine (NEWS CENTER)-- Bangor was a popular destination this weekend for brides-to-be as the 22nd annual Bangor Bridal Show came to town. This year brought brides from around the state, but there were another group of brides that seemed extra giddy.

Editor Melanie Brooks with Real Maine Weddings magazine said, "People are just running around giddy. They are excited. A lot of people may have had a commitment ceremony a small one with their family and friends. But now they can have the big awesome wedding that they've always dreamed about having and it can be legal."

Same-sex couples attending the the show including many who had already had commitment ceremonies?were looking for the perfect way to plan their special day.

Carol and Juanita Taylor were married five years ago in Canada. Once same-sex marriage passed in their home state of Maine, they planned to renew their vows.

Juanita Taylor said, "It's something we never thought would be possible, just never thought it would be possible...It's validation that it is all about love. You know? It's wonderful."

Juanita's wife, Carol Taylor,?said, "I can't tell you what it feels like to be thought of as an equal. That our marriage is as important as someone else's marriage. All the vendors have been so gracious and congratulatory."

Marketing Coordinator, Katie Leighton, with Day's Jewelry said, "We are just so thrilled, because we have partnered with a lot of same-sex couples before the law went through, because we have always treated everyone like 'This is your day! Regardless of what the law says this is your day to celebrate your love.' To now have them come in and be able to say this is your engagement ring..this is going to be your wedding bands. It's just really exciting."

The Taylors plan to renew their vows in September at their church in Bangor, on the anniversary of their Canadian wedding.

"I'm so delighted to be able to do it in that church with all of our friends because they couldn't go to Canada so it will be nice to have an actual church wedding," said Carol Taylor.

Maine has already launched its first website to help homosexual couples plan their weddings. The online resource allows same-sex couples a directory of gay-friendly wedding vendors. It can be found?here.
