The loss of more than 150 jobs at one of Shropshire?s biggest firms is due to the struggling UK economy, an MP said today.
Telford MP David Wright also pledged to work with unions to promote jobs in the town.
He was speaking after GKN Sankey Ltd announced 153 jobs are at risk. The firm, based in Hadley Castle Works, said it was undertaking a ?restructuring initiative? after the loss of a number of long-term contracts.
Labour MP Mr Wright said: ?My thoughts are with those affected and I hope that we can stimulate more demand in the economy to create local jobs.
?I think this is systematic of the lack of growth within the wider UK economy. I?ll work with the unions and other agencies to continue to promote jobs in Telford.?
All the job losses would come from the auto structure side of the business and would not affect employees of GKN Wheels.
The firm, which builds chassis and frames for companies including Ford, Toyota and Land Rover and employs 900 people, has opened a 90-day consultation period with employees who will be assisted by representatives from Unite and GMB unions.
Stefan Blasczyk, regional officer for Unite, said a lot of long-term contracts were coming to an end and the company contacted both unions to say there could be up to 153 job losses.
Announcing the job losses this week, Chris Fox, for GKN, said: ?We have entered into a consultation process with employees which could reduce the workforce by 153 people.
?We have known for some time that a current programme of longstanding, high-volume work will reduce and eventually cease.
?Economic times are tough.
?We need to re-shape and re-structure the business so it can compete for future work.?
Mr Blasczyk said: ?Together we will try to avert as many redundancies as possible.?
